Why These Newspaper Articles?

While looking for information on the Native Americans who were present in Adair County at one point in time, I came across three different newspaper articles all published at different times at the Adair County Historical Society. The common factor in all of these articles is their information on “The Big Neck War” and “the Cabins”.  As time progresses, the information in the newspapers change from the people of the cabins did no wrong to a here is the information and there are conflicts in the narrative that makes it unclear as to what started the war with the first settlers. Some information remains consistent with historical texts and that is displayed here. The tone of the article also changes as time progresses. In the first article, “First Settlement Broken Up 102 Years Ago This Month“, published on July 1st, 1931 in the Kirksville Daily Express and News  the tone of the article is expressed in the slurrs and text which is consistent with historical texts such as, E.M. Violette’s History of Adair County written at around the same time frame. I selected these articles as they show this change in tone over time for the incident and provide some of the reasons why the narratives have conflict and where.
