First Contacts with European Powers

The Midwest is a region that has been impacted by multiple European nations. The three major powers who settled in the Americas; the Spanish, the French, and the British, all laid claim to the lands of the Ioway, Missouria, and Otoe at one time or another. However, the French and the English had the most impact on the tribes as the French made first contact with the natives of the area, and the English eventually pushed the Ioway, Missouria, and Otoe out of their homelands and onto reservations.

This section of the website will give a brief introduction into how the Ioway, Missouri, and Otoe were impacted when both the French and the English first made contact.
